World Teachers’ Day 2024:
Valuing Teacher Voices
WORLD TEACHERS DAY 2024
Date: October 5, 2024
Theme: “Valuing teacher voices: Towards a new social contract in Education”
World Teachers’ Day, celebrated every year on October 5, honors teachers worldwide and recognizes their essential role in shaping the future of education. This day marks the anniversary of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which sets important standards for teacher preparation, employment, and working conditions. Additionally, the 1997 Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel complements this by addressing higher education professionals.
Since its inception in 1994, World Teachers’ Day has been a moment to reflect on the contributions teachers make to transforming education, as well as the challenges they face. This year’s theme, “Valuing teacher voices: Towards a new social contract in Education,” highlights the importance of amplifying teachers’ voices in decision-making processes. It recognizes the need to address systemic challenges within the profession, while also benefiting from the expertise and insight teachers bring to education.
The 2024 celebrations focus on creating more inclusive dialogues, ensuring teachers are heard, and establishing policies that reflect their needs and insights. As we celebrate their contributions, we also commit to rethinking the future of education with teachers at the forefront.
World Teachers’ Day is co-convened by UNESCO, the International Labour Organization (ILO), UNICEF, and Education International (EI). Let’s unite in recognizing the vital work of teachers and advocating for the support they need to continue transforming lives and communities.
