Kagulu Educators Commit to Create Child Labour-Free Zones

A significant orientation workshop focusing on the concept of child labour and establishing child labour-free zones was held on 12th July 2024 at the Kagulu Sub County Hall. This event brought together headteachers, deputy headteachers, and teachers in charge of academics from 11 schools participating in the Kagulu Child Labour Social Dialogue Project.

The orientation aimed to introduce the project, deepen understanding of child labour, and garner stakeholder support. Additionally, the workshop served to promote the visibility of the Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU) and provide updates on current educational affairs.

Notably, the workshop had 25 participants, including six female attendees, and was graced by several key figures: the Branch Chairperson of Buyende District, the Sub Branch Chairperson, the Regional Chairperson of Busoga, the Regional Coordinator, and a UNATU Program Officer.

Objectives of the Workshop:

1. Introduce the Kagulu Child Labour Social Dialogue Project.

2. Enhance understanding of child labour and the rationale behind the project to secure stakeholder buy-in.

3. Promote UNATU’s visibility and update educators on current educational affairs.

The District Education Officer (DEO) for Buyende District concluded the workshop, officially closing the meeting on child labour and child labour-free zones. The DEO expressed a strong commitment to supporting the project, recognizing it as a rare and valuable opportunity. Furthermore, the DEO promised to follow up on action plans developed by the schools to create child labour-free and attractive learning environments.

Key Resolutions:

– Headteachers committed to leading efforts to create child labour-free zones within their school communities.

– The REC Chairperson encouraged teachers to be exemplary and pursue further studies.

– The Labour Officer urged teachers to be at the forefront of combating child labour and to report any cases encountered.

A key takeaway from the workshop was the collective commitment to develop actionable plans aimed at promoting child-friendly and attractive schools for learners. The dedication of all attendees signifies a promising step towards eradicating child labour and ensuring a safe, nurturing environment for all children in the Kagulu Sub County.
