UNATU Hosts Youth Membership Education Workshop in Kikuube

On Tuesday 25th November 2025, eighty (80) young teachers from across Kikuube District gathered at Sir Tito Winyi Primary School for a Youth Membership Education Training Workshop organized by the Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU). This important engagement was part of the Union’s broader agenda to empower early career educators with critical knowledge about their rights, roles, and responsibilities — both as professionals and as union members.
The Event also had several dignitaries, including the General Secretary of UNATU, the Branch Chairperson of Kikuube, the District Education Officer (DEO), the District Human Resource Officer (HRO), and the Chairperson of the District Headteachers’ Association.

Opening Remarks: Branch Chairperson

The workshop commenced with a warm welcome from the Kikuube Branch Chairperson, who encouraged participants to fully engage and learn all they could about the union. He thanked the General Secretary and the Regional UNATU team for choosing Kikuube as one of the host districts for this important exercise. He also appealed to the district officials present to continue supporting teachers in administrative matters and professional development.

Openning Remarks from the DEO

The event was officially opened by the District Education Officer (DEO), who officiated the ceremony with remarks that emphasized the importance of professionalism in the teaching service. He urged the participants to uphold a strong work ethic, respect their supervisors, and refrain from absenteeism — a growing concern in the district — warning that such misconduct carries serious consequences.

Human Resource Session

A critical session was facilitated by the District Human Resource Officer, who helped participants better understand their rights and obligations as public servants. The session covered key topics such as grievance handling, Human Capital Management (HCM), leave entitlements, and retirement procedures. The participants expressed gratitude for the clarity and depth of this presentation.

Presentation by the General Secretary

The General Secretary of UNATU later delivered a comprehensive address, unpacking the Union’s Mission and Vision, and delving into important frameworks like the National Teacher Policy and the Public Standing Orders. He stressed the importance of unity among teachers despite the presence of splinter unions. He further updated the participants on the current status of the suspended Industrial Action and highlighted the channels through which teachers can access accurate information — such as the UNATU app and official website.

Engaging Plenary

A plenary session allowed participants to voice their concerns and pose questions. The leadership responded with clarity, reinforcing a sense of solidarity and leaving participants feeling heard and encouraged.

Conclusion

The workshop closed with a call from the General Secretary for continued unity, professional integrity, and patience as the union pursues salary harmonization and other member concerns through dialogue and institutional engagement. The participants departed with renewed purpose and commitment to supporting union efforts at all levels.
