In its continued commitment to supporting and empowering education leaders, the Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU) held a one-day Performance Management Training for Head Teachers in Bugweri Branch on August 5, 2025. The training is part of UNATU’s broader efforts to build the capacity of school leaders in partnership with the District Education Office.
The event brought together head teachers from various schools across Bugweri District, located in the Busoga Region, and focused on enhancing their understanding of performance management and effective school leadership.
The training commenced with opening remarks by the Branch Chairperson, setting the tone for a day of interactive learning and reflection. The Branch Executive Secretary presented the purpose and objectives of the training, emphasizing its role in strengthening leadership and appraisal processes within schools.
Two engaging sessions were facilitated by key district officials:
The District Education Officer (DEO), who provided insights into district-level expectations and performance evaluation.
The District Human Resource Officer, who delved into best practices for managing staff performance and aligning with national guidelines.
A Plenary Session, led by the Branch Chairperson, allowed participants to raise important questions about UNATU operations, teacher appraisal procedures, and other issues affecting school leadership. The open dialogue helped to clarify the role of the union in supporting head teachers and their schools.
The General Secretary of UNATU, in his remarks, provided critical updates on the union’s activities and encouraged unity among educators. He reminded participants of UNATU’s unique identity as the recognized voice of teachers in Uganda, urging them to remain focused and not be swayed by splinter groups seeking to divide the profession.
The Chairperson of Head Teachers in Bugweri District delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks, appreciating UNATU and the district leadership for prioritizing professional development. The training was officially closed by the General Secretary, leaving participants energized and better equipped to manage their schools.
This training is one of many ongoing efforts by UNATU to strengthen performance management, promote professionalism, and empower education leaders across the country.
