UNATU Hosts Head Teachers’ Performance Management Training in Serere District

Serere District | 23rd July 2025 — The Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU) held a performance management training for head teachers at Shaan Gardens in Serere District. The training aimed at strengthening school leadership through improved understanding of performance appraisal systems, the HCM system & reporting lines in the education sector.

The session brought together head teachers from both primary and secondary schools within Serere District. Key district education officials were also present, including the District Inspector of Schools (DIS) and the District Education Officer (DEO).

In his opening remarks, the Serere Branch Chairperson welcomed the participants and emphasized the importance of professional development for school leaders. The Regional Chairperson for Teso Region followed with a message of solidarity, encouraging head teachers to take full advantage of the training to enhance school performance and accountability.

The General Secretary of UNATU delivered a keynote presentation outlining the purpose and objectives of the training. He highlighted the union’s continued commitment to equipping school leaders with the tools and knowledge required to meet professional standards and effectively manage their responsibilities.

A dedicated session on performance appraisal was facilitated by the District Inspector of Schools, Serere, who walked participants through existing frameworks, expectations, and the importance of documentation and timely reporting.

This was followed by an open plenary session, during which participants shared their experiences and asked questions. Many expressed appreciation for the opportunity, noting that it not only clarified the appraisal process but also offered space for dialogue on current union updates and operational concerns in schools.

The event concluded with closing remarks from the DEO Serere, who applauded UNATU for organizing the training and called on head teachers to cascade the knowledge to their staff. He emphasised the importance of accountability and continuous professional development in maintaining quality education standards.
