MESSAGE FROM THE NATIONAL SECRETARY, WOMEN AFFAIRS TO COMMEMORATE INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2024

Dear ladies,

The theme for International Women’s Day 2024 is “Accelerating Gender Equality through Women Economic Empowerment.”

As you may be aware, Women’s economic empowerment is essential to achieving women’s rights and gender equalityCommonly defined, Women’s economic empowerment means ensuring women can equally participate in and benefit from decent work and social protection; access markets and have control over resources, their own time, lives, and bodies; and increased voice, agency, and meaningful participation in economic decision-making at all levels from the household to international institutions.  When more women work, economies grow.

In Uganda, as one of the key gender empowerment indicators and pillars, education has been one of the main sectors to benefit from gender inclusive policiesWhile more girls are attending school, literacy rates for women and girls are still lower than those of their male counterparts. Increasing women’s education outcomes allows them to keep pace with the growing economy by providing better access to income generating opportunities and increased participation in the formal labour market.

As teachers, we have every opportunity to not only empower ourselves but both the girl and boy child to enable them excel and complete school. Education remains one of the surest gateways to empowerment. Every child must have access to quality education without discrimination. As teachers, who are at the heart of the education process, we also have a huge role to play in mobilizing the community both within and outside school to support our learners and enable them remain, excel and complete school.

On a personal level, you may realize that only collective strength and action will allow you and me to be free to fight for the kind of society that meets basic human needs. I wish to challenge you to make a checklist on what you have to do as a teacher leader. Believe me or not, as a woman you have too much to do. Women deserve too much more than they get and are willing to fight for it. May you discover that you are fierce and strong, full of fire that cannot hold you back because your passion burns brighter than your fears.

Be the woman that fixes another Woman’s Crown without telling the world it was crooked.

May the world celebrate the woman in you.

Happy Women’s Day, 2024!

NATIONAL SECRETARY WOMEN AFFAIRS UNATU
