Kampala, Uganda – 21st July 2024 – The two-week INSET training programme, which ran from 8th to 19th July 2024, has successfully concluded, with 160 teachers from the districts of Lira, Dokolo, Kitgum, and Nwoya receiving comprehensive training. The training, held at Gulu Core PTC in Gulu City and Loro Core PTC in Oyam District, focused on enhancing Instructional Strategies, Leadership in Education, Learning Styles, Classroom Management, Gender Equality, and Strengthening the Union.
The programme welcomed 79 participants at Gulu Core PTC and 81 participants at Loro Core PTC. These educators engaged in sessions designed to equip them with the skills and knowledge necessary to improve educational outcomes in their respective schools.
The closing ceremony took place at Teachers House, the headquarters of Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU). It featured prominent figures including Dr. Cleophus Mugenyi, Commissioner for Basic Education, Ministry of Education and Sports; the General Secretary and Deputy General Secretary of UNATU; the Canadian Teachers’ Federation (CTF) team comprising eight tutors; the UNATU National Secretary of Planning and Organizing; the UNATU National Representative for Primary Education; the UNATU Program Officer; and the Regional Coordinator and Administrator for the Northern region. The Communications Manager was also in attendance.
The General Secretary, Baguma Filbert Bates expressed heartfelt gratitude to CTF for their long-standing collaboration with UNATU and thanked the Commissioner for his presence, which underscored the strong relationship between UNATU and the Ministry of Education.
Adia Grace, the National Secretary for Planning and Organizing echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration between CTF and UNATU. She acknowledged the regional staff, communications department, and field workers for their exceptional contributions. she also appreciated the Commissioner’s attendance, highlighting the positive relationship between UNATU and the Ministry of Education.
CTF team leaders from both Gulu and Loro Core PTCs shared their reflections. The Gulu Team Leader praised the coordination and support from UNATU, the positive learning environment, and the comprehensive presentations, particularly on gender equality. Despite initial tension among participants, these issues were promptly addressed, ensuring a smooth training experience.
The Loro Core PTC Team Leader thanked the on-ground support from UNATU staff, highlighted the active participation of educators, and expressed delight over the cultural night and the flexibility of the administration at the training site. Suggestions for improvement included better time management, though the overall feedback was highly positive.
Dr. Cleophus Mugenyi, the Chief Guest, commended the two-decade partnership between CTF and UNATU and the impact of the INSET training. He encouraged the use of UNATU website (www.unatu.org) for information sharing and thanked both CTF and UNATU teams for their dedication to the teachers of this country. He called for continued collaboration to further enhance Uganda’s education sector.
The insights and lessons learned from INSET 2024 will be used to refine and improve future training sessions, ensuring ongoing professional development and a commitment to quality education for all Ugandan teachers.
