UNATU Conducts Membership Education Training for Namayingo Branch Members

Namayingo District | 27th June 2026

The Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU) conducted a membership education training for members of Namayingo Branch on 27th June 2026 at Namayingo District Council Hall.

The training brought together teachers from different education subsectors for a day of reflection on union membership, professional responsibility, unity among teachers and the importance of understanding the laws and structures that guide the teaching profession.

The engagement was attended by the District Education Officer of Namayingo, the Human Resource Officer, the UNATU Namayingo Branch Chairperson, the Busoga Regional Coordinator and the UNATU Legal Officer, among other leaders and members.

Strengthening Members’ Understanding of the Union

In the welcome remarks, the Branch Chairperson and the District Education Officer appreciated the teachers for attending and encouraged them to use the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the Union and their role as members.

The Busoga Regional Coordinator later gave an overview of the purpose and objectives of the training, highlighting the importance of membership education in strengthening participation, awareness and commitment among teachers.

A Call for Unity and Responsibility

During the training, the UNATU Legal Officer reminded teachers that union membership comes with both rights and responsibilities.

He challenged members to reflect beyond the common question of what the Union has done for them, and instead also ask themselves what they have done for UNATU.

The Legal Officer called for unity among teachers, noting that the strength of any union depends on the collective commitment and active participation of its members.

He encouraged teachers to seek knowledge about the professional laws, policies and literature that guide both the teaching profession and the Union. He noted that informed members are better positioned to defend their rights, make better decisions and support the growth of the Union.

Teachers Cautioned on Financial Decisions

The Legal Officer also addressed the issue of multiple loans and urged teachers to be cautious with financial commitments.

He warned members against being trapped by loan arrangements or financial decisions that can create unnecessary pressure and affect their wellbeing.

Teachers were encouraged to read documents carefully, seek clarification where necessary and avoid being misled into commitments they do not fully understand.

Renewing Commitment to UNATU

The membership education training provided an opportunity for teachers in Namayingo Branch to interact with Union leaders, ask questions and better appreciate the value of belonging to UNATU.

Participants were reminded that the Union is strengthened when members are informed, united and actively involved in its activities.

As the training progressed into the plenary and closing sessions, the key message remained clear: UNATU is not separate from its members. Its strength lies in teachers who understand their rights, fulfil their responsibilities and work together for the good of the profession. [wp_ulike]
