The Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU) held its annual Branch Chairpersons’ Meeting on 11th July 2026 at Teachers’ House, bringing together members of the National Executive Council (NEC), branch chairpersons and staff to review progress, assess performance and plan ahead.
The meeting emphasized accountability, reminding leaders that the Union’s strength lies not only in national advocacy but in the quality of service delivered at branch level.
Branch Leadership at the Core
National Chairperson Tumuhimbise Zadock commended branch leaders for their dedication, noting that branches are where members directly experience the Union.
He welcomed the recent salary enhancement for teachers as a step forward, while acknowledging that disparities still remain. He also extended condolences to members affected by loss and hardship, noting that 263 members passed away in the first half of 2026.
Focus on Value and Accountability
Leaders were urged to move beyond implementing activities and focus on creating real value for members. Branch Chairpersons were encouraged to strengthen recruitment, ensure accountability and promote initiatives like the UNATU SACCO to support members’ financial wellbeing.
Key Issues and Policy Updates
Discussions covered important issues affecting teachers, including salary matters, the National Teachers Bill, the Public Service Pension Fund and preparations for the 21st Annual Delegates’ Conference. Leaders were urged to stay informed to better guide members.
Digital Skills and Development
The meeting highlighted the EQUIP 1000 Africa Digital Skills Training, which attracted 1,415 valid applications from across the country. Branch leaders were encouraged to promote such opportunities as digital skills become increasingly important.
Looking Ahead
The meeting reaffirmed the importance of strong, accountable branch leadership. Chairpersons were tasked with staying visible, engaging members and ensuring effective implementation of Union activities.
The message was clear: a stronger UNATU depends on committed leaders and active branches delivering real value to members.
