UNATU and FNV Launch Data Entry Training Workshop

Today, 12th August 2024, the Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU), in partnership with FNV, commenced a five-day Data Entry training workshop at Teachers House. The workshop, aimed at training data entrants who will enter UNATU’s membership data on the database. The workshop was opened by the Human Resource Officer, Abaru Pamela.

The workshop, which runs from 12th to 16th August, has gathered 12 data entrants (five females and seven males) along with key facilitator: Sebastian Okiki, the lead consultant from Tanzania, Stella Abongomera, the IT Officer, and Etabu Emmanuel, the ICT Assistant to support in the training.

Abaru Pamela, the Human Resource Officer  welcomed the participants on behalf of the management, providing an orientation on the Union’s vision, mission and the importance of their role in achieving it. She emphasized the need for diligence and encouraged open communication with the consultant. She highlighted the significance of building strong relationships between the data entrants and UNATU and explained the terms of reference for their work. Pamela urged the participants to take the training seriously, noting that concentration throughout the five days is crucial.

Sebastian Okiki, FNV’s Lead Consultant, expressed his gratitude to the participants for attending and encouraged them to actively engage and ask questions. He noted that, although the participants are computer scientists, the training would focus on basic data entry. He explained the uniqueness of trade unions and the importance of understanding their specific language. He emphasized the necessity of populating UNATU’s newly adopted information system and highlighted the core activity of data entry, stressing the importance of confidentiality. The training will follow a modular format, covering all necessary aspects within the set modules.

Sebastian highlighted that the focus of the data entry would be on the accuracy of data being input rather than the quantity of entries, and that the project, sponsored by FNV, would provide theoretical insights into data management in the context of a trade union.

The Data Entry training workshop is a significant step towards enhancing UNATU’s Management Information System (Membership Database), with the active participation and engagement of the data entrants playing a crucial role in this progress.
