UNATU Staff Workshop Concludes with Focus on Growth and Union Advancement

Kampala, 6th September 2024 — Day two of the UNATU Staff Workshop continued with engaging sessions aimed at improving data management practices and supporting staff in managing work-life balance. Held at Teachers’ House, the workshop saw the participation of 41 regional, secretariat, and project staff members.

The day commenced with a session on Data and Information Management, led by various facilitators. The Deputy General Secretary (DGS) Duluga Buni Phillip presented on the types of union records and the importance of proper Records Management. This was followed by Joyce Nabwegamu, the Records Assistant, who gave an insightful presentation on Filing and Setting Up Record Tracing Trails.

The importance of Digital Information Management, including data storage and security, was presented by the IT Officer Stella Abongomera, emphasising the need for data protection. The session also featured the Resource Mobilisation Volunteer, who highlighted the value of data in strengthening union activities. The plenary for this session was moderated by the Communication Manager, who engaged participants in a lively discussion on the key takeaways from the data management session.

Work-Life Balance

The next session focused on Managing Work and Life, with sub-sessions exploring different aspects of achieving a healthy balance. The Gender Officer, Aja Joan, presented on Internal and External Factors Affecting Work, while the Regional Coordinator for Busoga, Baluka Dorothy offered advice on handling heavy workloads.

Managing Emotions at Work, a critical element of maintaining a productive environment, was discussed by the Finance Officer, with contributions from the drivers, Joel Byarugaba and Amos Kakembo. Meanwhile, Human Resource Officer Pamela Abaru led an engaging session on Managing Work, Life, and Personal Issues, which resonated strongly with the participants. The session’s plenary was led by Legal Officer Tumwebaze Richard, who facilitated a productive conversation on the challenges of balancing professional and personal life.

Appraisals and Legal Matters

The Program Officer led a session on Appraisals, discussing the feedback process and the importance of midterm reviews in evaluating staff performance with emphasis on result-oriented appraisal. Participants also received updates on preparations for World Teachers’ Day on 5th October and the Annual Delegates Conference scheduled for December.

In a dedicated session, the Legal Officer Tumwebaze Richard tackled Legal Issues, including fraud-related challenges arising from financial institutions. His detailed guidance on how to address these issues was well received by the staff, offering practical solutions for the challenges faced.

Conclusion

The workshop concluded on a high note, with staff feeling empowered and ready to apply the skills and knowledge gained during the two-day event. With renewed energy and a stronger focus on data management, work-life balance, and team collaboration, the participants left ready to “lift UNATU’s flag high” and continue their roles in advancing the union’s mission.
