Teachers’ House, Kampala | 18th July 2026
The Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU) has trained 148 school representatives as Master Trainers in a move aimed at strengthening membership education across the country.
The one-day Training of Trainers, held on Saturday at Teachers’ House on Bombo Road, brought together representatives from primary, secondary and TVET institutions. The participants are expected to roll out training in their respective regions, districts, branches and schools.
During the session, participants reviewed the draft Membership Education and Training Handbook, identifying areas that require clarification and improvement before it is officially rolled out nationwide.
Trainers to act as Union ambassadors
UNATU officials said the Master Trainers will play a broader role beyond delivering training sessions.
“You are not just trainers, but ambassadors of the Union,” the General Secretary said, noting that they will support membership education, mobilisation, recruitment, mentoring and communication.
Echoing the presentation delivered during the training, participants were reminded that “Master Trainers are the backbone of membership education and the bridge between the Union and its members.”
Participants were urged to maintain a consistent Union message when engaging members at school, branch and regional levels.
Focus on practical training
The training also emphasised practical facilitation skills, with participants guided on adult learning methods, interactive engagement and handling difficult questions.
Organisers stressed that effective training should go beyond lectures, encouraging facilitators to create interactive sessions where teachers can share experiences and relate Union information to real challenges.
As highlighted in the facilitation sessions, “training is not about talking to people, but engaging them to learn, reflect and act.”
Addressing teachers’ concerns
A key part of the training focused on preparing Master Trainers to respond to common concerns raised by teachers.
Participants were advised to rely on verified information on the union website and official Union positions when addressing issues such as membership benefits, subscriptions, salaries, loans and Union services.
Concerns about corporate wear and misinformation about the Union were also raised during discussions.
Trainers were reminded that “every question from a member is an opportunity to build trust in the Union.”
Digital engagement highlighted
The training also addressed the role of digital platforms in Union communication.
Master Trainers were encouraged to promote official UNATU communication channels, support the use of the MyUNATU App and ensure responsible engagement on social media.
According to the presentation on digital mobilisation, “every Master Trainer is also a digital ambassador of UNATU and should help our members to follow our digital channels.”
Next steps
The newly trained Master Trainers will be deployed across the country as part of a broader effort to strengthen membership awareness and participation.
The Union added that finalisation of the handbook and continued support for trainers will be key to the success of the programme.
The initiative is expected to build a more informed membership and strengthen Union structures at all levels.
“A strong Union is built on informed, active and united members.”
