The Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU) commenced its 19th Annual Delegates’ Conference (ADC) on 10th December 2024, under the theme, “Valuing Teachers’ Voices: Towards a New Social Contract for Education.” Held at the Agaba Centre in Kabale Municipality, the two-day event brought together delegates from across Uganda.
The conference opened with a symbolic march through Kabale town, showcasing the collective strength and unity of educators. This act of solidarity resonated with the local community, reinforcing the importance of teachers’ voices in shaping education policies.
The General Secretary of UNATU extended warm greetings to delegates and moderated fraternal greetings from teacher unions, including the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and the Tanzania Teachers Union (TTU) and the Rwanda Public School Teachers’ Union (SNER). These messages emphasised solidarity and the shared commitment to improving the teaching profession across borders.
The conference also attracted local leaders from Kabale Municipality, Rukiga, including District Education Officers (DEOs), and the Mayor Kabale Municipality. Hon. Rwabushaija Margaret, Workers MP, The UNATU NEC, UNATU SACCO Manager were among the notable guests.
The host chairpersons, representing Kabale Main and Municipality branches along with the South Western Region Chairperson, extended heartfelt remarks, highlighting the warmth and hospitality of Kabale as a host town. They highlighted the significance of the delegates’ presence in Kabale creating collaboration and dialogue within the teaching community.
The National Chairperson addressed the delegates, emphasising unity and resilience amidst challenges faced by the teaching profession. He extended heartfelt appreciation to the organising committee, NEC, and union leaders for their dedication. The Chairperson highlighted critical issues such as recruitment, teacher welfare, and the National Teachers’ Bill, urging delegates to propose actionable solutions. He also stressed the importance of maintaining trust in leadership, prioritising member welfare, and fostering a spirit of solidarity. Concluding with a call to focus on health and wellbeing, he reaffirmed the union’s commitment to serving its members’ interests.

The chief guest, Hon. Arinaitwe Rwakajara, Workers MP, delivered an inspiring keynote address, emphasising the critical role of educators as “architects of our society’s future.” He called on teachers to remain informed of policies under Education, build strong community reputations, and collaborate within their societies to drive positive change.
A highlight of the day was the launch of the UNATU App, developed by AfroSoft. The app streamlines communication among members, provides quick updates, and facilitates direct engagement with the General Secretary. Chairperson Zadock Tumuhimbise, alongside NEC members and AfroSoft CEO Katamba Ronald, unveiled the app, describing it as a transformative tool for educators. (About the App Launch)
