Prioritising Teacher Wellbeing: Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Resources

Teaching is one of the most rewarding professions, but it also comes with unique pressures and responsibilities that can affect educators’ wellbeing. From managing heavy workloads and adapting to changing demands, to supporting learners through difficult situations, teachers often carry burdens that can impact their mental and emotional health.

Recognising this reality, UNATU continues to promote awareness and practical support for teachers’ mental health and psychosocial wellbeing. Mental health is an essential part of overall health and influences how we think, feel and respond to the challenges of daily life. As highlighted in the Mental Health and Psychosocial Support training materials, it enables individuals to cope with normal stresses, work productively and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

To support teachers, UNATU is making available two practical resources:

  • Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) Training Manual by Baguma Filbert Bates, General Secretary and MHPSS Master Trainer. The guide introduces key concepts in mental health, recognising early warning signs, providing psychosocial support and creating supportive environments for teachers and learners.
  • Stress Management and Burnout Prevention Guide, which offers practical strategies for identifying stressors, managing workplace pressures and preventing burnout among educators. The resource reminds us that while some stress can motivate us, prolonged unmanaged stress can negatively affect both physical and mental health.

We encourage all teachers, school leaders and education stakeholders to download, read and share these resources. Taking care of ourselves is not a luxury. It is an important step towards building resilient educators, healthier schools and better learning outcomes for every child.

Download the resources below and take time to invest in your wellbeing because when teachers thrive, education thrives.

It is true we all have stress irrespective of which type of stress. However we need to manage it so that it doesn’t lead us into depression and subsequently death.

  2. Prioritizing the mental well being of teachers is very important for their continuous productivity while educating the nation.
More trainings and psychosocial support to them shall help better their lives and reduce on the no. of deaths in the long run.
