UNATU Launches 2026 with Strategic Planning Sessions

At the start of every year, the Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU) convenes its annual planning sessions to define priorities, align activities, and establish a clear strategic direction.

The UNATU 2026 planning sessions have officially commenced, bringing together Secretariat staff, Regional staff, and Regional Chairpersons at the national level to prepare for the year ahead.

These meetings are central to strengthening coordination, budgeting, and implementation across the Union.

Reflecting on 2025 Achievements and Lessons

A key component of the UNATU 2026 planning sessions is reflection.

Participants review:

  • Achievements recorded in 2025

  • Implementation challenges encountered

  • Regional experiences and feedback

  • Lessons that can improve performance in 2026

This reflection process ensures that planning is evidence-based and responsive to real conditions faced by teachers across the country.

By sharing experiences openly, leaders build institutional learning and strengthen collective accountability.

Setting Strategic Priorities for 2026

The planning sessions go beyond budgeting. They define the tone and focus of the Union’s work for the year.

Key priority areas discussed include:

  • Teacher welfare and professional development

  • Advocacy and policy engagement

  • Programme implementation and partnerships

  • Membership education and mobilisation

  • Governance and accountability structures

Clear priorities help the Union allocate resources effectively and remain focused on issues that directly impact teachers and the quality of education.

Budget Alignment and Activity Planning

The UNATU 2026 planning sessions also ensure that proposed activities are aligned with the approved annual budget.

This process promotes:

  • Financial discipline

  • Transparency and accountability

  • Realistic scheduling of activities

  • Strategic use of available resources

Aligning planning with budgeting strengthens the Union’s ability to deliver on its mandate throughout the year.

Cascading Planning to Regional and Branch Levels

UNATU’s planning model is structured and participatory.

After the national meeting:

  1. Regional teams hold their own planning sessions to contextualize national priorities.

  2. Branch leadership then aligns local activities with regional and national objectives.

This cascading model ensures ownership at every level of the Union and promotes coordinated implementation across the country.

Strengthening Unity and Coordination

Bringing together national and regional leadership at the beginning of the year reinforces unity of purpose.

The UNATU 2026 planning sessions provide space for dialogue, collaboration, and shared responsibility. They set a clear foundation for advancing teacher welfare, promoting professionalism, and strengthening advocacy efforts.

Through structured planning and coordinated action, UNATU continues to position itself to respond effectively to emerging education issues while protecting and promoting the interests of teachers nationwide.
